Description
While I was visiting India, my son-in-law found this egret. It was caught in a fence by twine that was knotted around its feet. We managed the cut the tangled twine from its feet, however, one foot was in pretty bad shape. Unfortunately, the toes had been tied together and the poor fella had to stand and hobble around on its knuckles. We were quite concerned that he may never regain normal function of that foot. We decided to make a shoe for him to see if we could coax his foot into working properly again. We taped a sturdy piece of cardboard to his foot; it appeared as if he was wearing a snow shoe in the tropics of India! After a little while, the bird became used to the new contraption and started walking around with no problems. The first few days, when we'd take the shoe off to see if there was any improvement, his foot would curl back up as if it were still tied. However, after about two weeks, his foot had regained full function and I'm happy to report that he was released back to the wild.
