Artist's Description

A mesquite tree and a couple of saguaro cactus flank the old and dusty dirt road of this timeless image. As I walked this road on a hot day in autumn, I mused over how little some places in the desert have changed during the last century. Arizona was the last territory in the continental U.S to be granted statehood and it only occurred a little over 100 years ago, in 1912 (as opposed to the eastern states that were granted statehood 125 years before Arizona). and in many ways, Arizona still feels like the 'wild west' as the desert landscape remains extremely foreboding if someone were to venture off the grid. Not only would a person contend with the intense hot and dry conditions he or she would need to be extremely cognizant about the surroundings where the landscape is full of prickly cactus, venomous critters and big cats.
