Description
During my visit to India there was a festival to honor the deity Lord Ganesha. All around the city, large and small statues of Ganesha were placed in tents along the roadside. Music played and people gathered in prayer and celebration. After days of festivities, individual statues are transported in a parade-like setting with drummers drumming and people dancing as they follow the idol to the river. The statue, which is made from clay, is then placed into the water where it dissolves back to its natural elements.
Ganesha is known as the god for every man. He is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honored at the start of rites and ceremonies.
