This little cutie stopped to pose for the camera on a Peruvian mountainside.

Alpaca are a domesticated camel-like animal, native to four countries in South America. There are two species of Alpaca, the Suri, and pictured here, the huacaya. These animals are raised high in the Andes mountains for their fiber which is sheared and processed into yarn to make clothing and other items. They are ruminant herd animals and graze on grass.While hiking through the Andes mountains, I saw more alpaca than people. There aren't any fences or walls in the mountains to keep the herds contained. Occasionally I would see a shepherd or shepherdess with their herd but more often than not, the alpaca would be grazing without a soul in site.
