Description
A male bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) stands on a downward slope on a hillside in Montana's National Bison Range. From being in the tall grass, he has picked up seeds and plant debris on his face and coat. One can tell the difference between a ram and an ewe by the size of their horns. Rams have enormous curving horns that can weigh up to 30 pounds (these horns are used for fighting to determine dominance and mating rights). Ewes horns are much smaller and don't curve around. This particular bighorn sheep was part of a group of about 15 males, all resting or eating on a steep, sunny slope.
