Description
This adult male, rocky mountain bighorn sheep, stands facing downward on the side of a steep slope in Montana's National Bison Range.
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) are native to North America. They can be found in the northwest, throughout the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges and also in the desert regions of the southwest US and northwest Mexico. They are nimble climbers and are often spotted balancing precariously on the side of rugged mountainsides (although they do love lush alpine meadows too!) The males of the species are highly identifiable by their enormous curving horns that weigh up to 30 pounds (these horns are used for fighting to determine dominance and mating rights).
